Thirteen years ago, when I first embarked on my journey into the world of fashion, I set a goal that felt both bold and aspirational. I envisioned creating something that wouldn’t just exist temporarily but would leave a lasting legacy – an event that would grow to become an integral part of the fashion and cultural landscape here in New Zealand.
At the time, it seemed like a distant dream, but through determination, passion, and countless hours of hard work, that vision has now come to fruition. Recently, Pacific Fusion Fashion Show has become a permanent fixture in New Zealand Fashion Week, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished. The journey has been far from easy, marked by challenges and hurdles that tested my resolve, but every sacrifice, every late night, and every obstacle has been absolutely worth it.
From the very beginning, I knew that the Pacific fashion community held an important and often underrepresented place within the New Zealand fashion industry. Our culture is rich with creativity, innovation, and storytelling through textiles and design. I’ve always believed that the Pacific’s contribution to New Zealand fashion was not only vital but deeply deserving of recognition on a larger scale. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing the Pacific fashion community grow, evolve, and continuously push boundaries, and I’ve worked to ensure that our voices and perspectives are included and celebrated in mainstream spaces.
Now, with Pacific Fusion Fashion Show becoming a permanent part of New Zealand Fashion Week, it feels like a monumental step not only for me personally but for the entire Pacific fashion community. This achievement is a reflection of our collective strength, resilience, and creativity. The hard work, the sacrifices, and the challenges have all led to this moment, where we can stand proudly and showcase the incredible talent and innovation that our community brings to the table.
But this is just the beginning. It’s not just about having a seat at the table – it’s about owning the space, setting new trends, and continuing to push the boundaries of what fashion means in Aotearoa and beyond. The Pacific fashion community has always been here, contributing to the fabric of New Zealand’s fashion identity, and now, it’s time for us to fully embrace the spotlight we deserve. It’s time for our stories, our designs, and our culture to shine brighter than ever before. This is our moment, and I am more excited than ever for what the future holds.
